“One of the best live bands you’ll see this year” Louder Than War
Croatian led London band proFESSional continue their assault on the airwaves with 3rd single Madam G – a Fontaines D.C. / Dead Kennedys style alt rock gem that explores themes of complicity & consequence, while acting as a means for the listener to process extremely uncomfortable truths about human nature. For the as yet to be initiated, Madam G is about Ghislaine Maxwell.
Following on from previous singles Pizza For Breakfast – a song with similar themes to Bowie’s Man Who Sold The World & TELEVISION – an incendiary number exploring the impact of media, Madam G reflects on the tension created between allure & morality, while capturing the complexity of Ghislaine’s choices & the ultimate reckoning she faces.
Croatian lead vocalist Mani explains: “It’s easy to judge someone based on their isolated actions, but understanding a person deeply is far more challenging. The lyric challenges the simplistic view of a modern women as either a victim or perpetrator, inviting us to reflect on the intricate factors that lead a person into morally questionable situations. The line, “Daddy raised no fool…” highlights (but does not in any way excuse) Madam G‘s behaviour & the potential influences that can lead someone astray”. All 3 singles are produced by Danton Supple (Suede, Elbow) who the band feel has captured the essence of their sound perfectly.
So who are proFESSional & how did it all begin? Three musicians called Rob, Paul & Marco meet Croatian physical therapist Mani & talk about forming a band. Mani starts humming guitar riffs in their ears… “na-na, na-na, na-na”, that kind of thing – then he starts sending voice notes & on it goes. It soon transpires that the riffs & the lyrics come to Mani at the same time since they’re formed out of the same idea. Some music scholars like to call this doubling: we just think of it as what proFESSional do.
proFESSional are Mani (vocals), Rob Hennebry (guitars), Paul Fifield (guitars), Marco Gaspari (bass) & Jonny Brister (drums). In terms of flavours/influences, think Stooges, think Hives, think Fontaines DC… that sort of thing. Or at least that’s when they’re not reminding you of Buzzcocks, Swell Maps or Spizz… or something else that’s been preserved in a time capsule & transported from 1978. That’s right: there’s nothing 1977 about them at all.
Having recently wowed a packed house when they headlined Islington’s O2, proFESSional will be playing with the Levellers at Margate’s Dreamland (12th Nov) as well as with The Luka State at Brighton’s Green Store Door (14th Nov) & London’s 100 Club (16th Nov).
In today’s world we’re living in a pandemic of judgement that’s driving us all further apart from one another & proFESSional are not afraid to tackle difficult subjects that arise from that environment in their music. With further single releases building up to an album in summer 2025, proFESSional are a band to watch out for both live & on record – don’t miss!
