86TVs – Komorebi
86TVs have dropped new single Komorebi and the band’s Will White states: “Komorebi is the Japanese word for sunlight seeping through the leaves of trees. I feel like this song hovers in mid-air, and I can circle around it observing the moment in time it came from. We recorded it live with a loop [drummer] Jamie made playing out into the room which is neither fully in key or time but seemed to capture the essence of the song and the word Komorebi.” In its accompanying video, tennis legend John McEnroe plays the part of 86TVs’ therapist, who loses his temper upon realising that he can’t solve their problems! A beautiful, soothing track with heartfelt lyrics that gradually builds and builds to a crescendo – loving it!
Rosie Lowe – In My Head
London-based singer-songwriter Rosie Lowe has shared infectious new single In My Head from upcoming album Lover, Other, and takes on multiple roles working in a London cafe in the video. The focus is on small moments, that are repeated, which is a smart way to address a song which reflects the artist’s concerns about the important stuff – life and death, birth and loss, youth and age. Rosie states: “In My Head is a song about feeling the change in life and trying to learn to just surrender to it and not overthink. It’s about digging deep to a place inside where I forge on anyway, despite my fears.” Great vocals, great beat – a short but sweet belter!
Our Girl – Something About Me Being A Woman
Our Girl have shared powerful new single Something About Me Being A Woman from their forthcoming album The Good Kind. Soph explains: “This song felt like the perfect place to put a lot of frustration after running out of patience with someone who wasn’t treating me very well. I think it’s important to give people the benefit of the doubt, but in this case it went too far, and I got tired of dealing with someone else’s preconceptions, and how they think they’re entitled to treat me. A big theme of this album is making the best of things. It’s a loving record, but in this song I just wanted to let the frustration out.” A dynamic track with poignant lyrics that lead to an explosive climax when suppressed anger finally spills forth, backed by snarling guitar and crashing cymbals.
Lava La Rue – Aerial Head
West-London’s Lava La Rue has shared 17-track album Starface, which combines psychedelic funk, ska punk, grunge, soul, and indie rock, and it’s a banger from start to finish! The record hangs around a concept—an alien lands on Earth and learns about the destructive nature of human relationships (or as La Rue puts it, a “lesbian Ziggy Stardust”). We bring you the Tame Impala-like track Aerial Head with its infectious dance-beat. Engrossing lyrics and a unique sound all the way from Lavaland – love it!
Honeyglaze – Pretty Girls
London trio Honeyglaze resist bad habits on witty new single Pretty Girls, taken from their upcoming album Real Deal. They state: “Pretty Girls is our poppiest song yet, and we reworked it intermittently over a couple of years. I think we were hesitant to lean into the simplicity of it for a while, as we normally love pushing our arrangements and going for more unconventional parts. We really stripped this song back, tried not to overcomplicate it and just enjoyed how fun and groovy it is. The song is about resisting the urge to indulge in bad habits. The line ‘I’m in touch with my feminine side I always wear pink’ was actually taken from a conversation I overheard, it’s one of my favourite lyrics because I still don’t know whether it’s sarcastic or not.”
Rear Window – Running Away
A sultry bossa-nova groove with filmic keys sets up this first offering from Rear Window – a duo featuring blues guitar aficionado Santi Arribas from The Roadside Bandits Project & ex Gang of Four vocalist John Sterry. Seemingly a song about how the accumulation of life experiences don’t always resolve our feelings of anxiety, the rich texture of Sterry’s tightly layered vocals definitely pull you in as the song progresses. Add to that some tasteful blues licks from Arribas that take the song to another level and you’ve got an alluring debut from two highly accomplished musicians – understatement is the ‘name of the game’ on this one and knowing the pedigree of those involved I’m definitely interested in hearing more.
The Allergies – No Flash (ft. Ohmega Watts)
Bristol’s The Allergies recruit New York rhyme royalty, Ohmega Watts, who steps up to the task of flowing over one of the toughest beats The Allergies have ever made on new single No Flash. The rap veteran delivers his electrically charged and thought-provoking lyrics over maxed out drums of death. Throwing shade at shallow fakers, and taking pin-point shots at those that don’t do this for the art. It’s boom-bap rap, cut from the finest cloth. With expertly chopped and layered breaks and samples crackling over haunted piano and guitar licks. Leaving space for anthemic, sweeping drones to swell as the man on the mic delivers a sermon you can’t help but bang your head to.
Tex – Short Straws
Copenhagen-based singer-songwriter Tex has shared heartfelt new single Short Straws from the EP Identity Crisis and states: “I wrote Short Straws inspired by bad luck and betrayal, in friendships and romantic relationships, patchworked together in different locations with unconventional techniques. From phone recordings to destroyed and distorted classical guitars. It’s been quite a long but extremely enjoyable process.” The EP embodies a dichotomy of creative environments, being written half in London and half in Copenhagen. It’s not just physical locations that inform the sonic landscape of this release; Tex draws profound inspiration from the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan poetry and literature, a heritage unearthed during a transformative journey to visit his grandfather’s family.
HOLiDAY MYSTICS – Deliberance
Great to have Tasmanian alt-rock outfit HOLiDAY MYSTICS back with their belter of a new single Deliberance (a made-up word combining ‘deliberate’ & ‘ignorance’). With its heartfelt vocals & strong lyrical imagery, the spiritually uplifting Deliberance tells the age-old story of a brotherly feud & of opposing forces in our world – with a shift of perspective comes the realisation that we’re all the same. Sung as a dynamic male & female duet, the soaring vocals leave the listener contemplating the world we all live in & humanity’s relationship with itself on this powerful anthem. Definitely ones to watch & they’re touring the UK this month so do yourself a favour and check social media to catch one of their rousing live performances.
Supermilk – Robot Talk
North-London’s indie-punk outfit Supermilk have shared their highly anticipated new album High Precision Ghosts which follows a loose theme revolving around the remnants of toxic relationships, both romantic and platonic, and how they linger like ghosts, returning to haunt you when you least expect them. The XTC-meets-Hot Club de Paris banger Robot Talk chronicles a desperate attempt to communicate with a partner who expresses themselves in a totally different way. For a Supermilk track, its 4-minute 15-second run time is practically epic, and one that will have you singing along with every word in no time. The album is a testament to Supermilk‘s relentless creativity and evolution, capturing their distinctive fusion of 80s post-punk and 90/00s indie rock.
