Hull’s witty new punk outfit Culture Clash made a big splash at the city’s annual Freedom Festival in September this year & continue to make a noise around Humberside’s burgeoning music scene with their raucous live shows. Now comes the time to release their debut single Bad Odour – a track that talks about the uncomfortable feelings that can surface when being on the wrong side of, & overwhelmed by, abusive behaviour.
Produced by renowned indie producer Adam Pattrick & released on local creative youth hub Warren Records, Bad Odour kicks off with a self-assured grunge bassline before a wall of ‘Teen Spirit’ style guitars launch the listener into verse one. Challenging the actions of popular bullies encountered throughout high school, lead vocalist Kaii expresses his anger & frustration at being silent for fear of reprisal, while recognising his repressed feelings of revenge & their destructive nature if acted upon.
Bass player Freddie also explains a twist in the band’s story that gives purpose & meaning to the release: “To me, Bad Odour is especially important as it’s tied to how the band came to be as it currently is. Culture Clash was a concept between three friends for a couple of years, but we never managed to develop the idea into something bigger. However, after the unfortunate passing of our original bass player Charlie, we felt we had a responsibility to push the band into becoming something more. Then after James joined us on drums, that vision came about & this was the first song we finished writing on our first day in the rehearsal room”.
