Following the success of their previous singles Running Away & Head Above Water, that received love & support from BBC6 Music’s Gideon Coe, Radio X’s John Kennedy & BBC Introducing’s Abbie McCarthy, alt-pop outfit Rear Window announce the release of their debut album Happiness By Design on 4th April 2025 & share new track from it Multi-Coloured Skies – a song about personal inspiration, the unfulfillment of dreams & how optimism can drive hope.
Rear Window is the moniker for duo Gang of Four vocalist JJ Sterry & The Roadside Bandits Project’s producer / guitarist Santi Arribas who meld club beats with traditional production techniques & instrumentation on Multi-Coloured Skies to create a highly distinctive sound, over which the dry witted JJ Sterry vocalises his inner most thoughts & feelings.
The song itself deals with elation often experienced when in ephemeral situations, only to find that following through on ideas dreamt up in the moment, are not so easy to follow through in the long run. “We’re gonna take the long road while this mad world spins” sings Sterry as he considers the expansive optimism felt when experiencing that which is out of the norm.
Sterry explains: “While away I got caught up in how everything felt so much better than back home… like going from winter with all its black white & greys, to full technicolour. I made a pact with a friend we’d live life differently; but on return, it seemed that life just got in the way & those dreams evaporated. There’s always something holding you back from doing it; friends, family, relationships etc – but maybe that’s ok, as you would have had to give up all that makes you truly happy. This song’s about optimism, just having dreams rather than necessarily realising them – as long as you have them, there’s hope!”
Citing Talking Heads, The Cure, Baxter Dury & XTC as creative influences, Rear Window first met when Sterry was invited by the late Andy Gill to join his influential post-punk outfit Gang of Four as their new front man, with whom he toured extensively from 2015. At the time, Arribas was working with Gill at his Rear Window recording studios until his passing, after which Arribas took over the running of the place.
The duo sat together to write a song for The Roadside Bandits Project’s 2nd album & decided to ‘write a couple more songs for fun…’. This then evolved into Happiness By Design – Rear Window’s debut album. Sterry pens the lyrics while Arribas leads the production & for them, it felt only natural to name their new project after the studio they work in.
With juxtaposed influences & each member bringing skill sets from different angles, Rear Window meet in the middle to create exciting music that unconstrained by genre. Definitely one to check!
