Taken from his debut album New In Town, the Texas born, South London based bedroom pop aficionado Rainn Byrns gets an inspired reimagining of his self-deprecating indie-pop classic BIG via a lyric video animated by tattoo artist Charles Hall aka @charlie.cantdraw. The video reflects on the song’s theme about coming to terms with arriving in a city much bigger than you & working in a dead-end job while others seem to be ‘making it big’!
Charles was really happy to work on the video saying “it’s great to take the ideas I come up with as a tattoo artist, animate them & set it all to music… very exciting!”
As with all of Rainn’s music, BIG was recorded at his home studio in Peckham, South London, known for its rich art scene, where he played all the instruments himself using only analogue recording techniques.
“For me” says Rainn “the song’s a reality check about how the process of bashing your head against a wall over success, can stop you being in the moment & enjoying the journey. The lyric ‘you will never know when you are having the time of your life’ highlights this & ‘I wish I could take my own advice’ is the classic case of being able to give advice that you can’t take yourself. Music has many purposes & for me this song gets a fair bit off my chest, airing the frustration I’ve felt in the process of creation & self-comparison – plus we all know that comparison is the thief of joy!”
Rainn spent the early part of his life moving around the world & has absorbed a wide range of musical influences, citing Jonathan Richman & Lou Reed for the honesty in their songwriting, Japanese artist & producer Haroumi Hosono for his astounding versatility & Brazilian music from 1920s to 1970s as all key points of inspiration.
With his talent being recognised by The Line Of Best Fit, DIY, Hard of Hearing, So Young, The Guardian plus BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé & Radio X’s John Kennedy, this ‘crappy-go-lucky’ character has an innate talent for writing from the heart with total honesty, even if it’s a bit ugly sometimes, catching a mood that is sometimes full of sadness but equally hopeful – after watching this video, we hope you agree.
